Lindy Stark
By Isaiah Frizzell
Giddy, funny, charming and gorgeous are universally beloved traits? Well yes, of course, and Lindy Stark, who manages the Attic thrift store, embodies them all with aplomb. An energetic force (whimsically dressed with a spiritually charged, carefree style) Stark beams these elements and, to the community’s great luck, she plays a major role in helping the afflicted with an eye on the environment. Stark is a devotee of creating the world we all want to live in through civic-minded, social and environmentally conscious business decisions.
The Attic is one of the four fantastic thrift stores Hailey has to offer BUT they do something very different. With the Advocates behind it all, they’re more than a thrift. The Advocates likely need no introduction as one of the ultimate non-profits of benefit to those in need https://www.theadvocatesorg.org//.
“The Advocates Attic is the only thrift store in the Valley that provides FREE vouchers to women and men in need to shop for necessities like warm clothing, shoes, dishes, and furniture in difficult times. One hundred percent of our proceeds go to the Advocates. That’s all we do. All of our work is in concert with them. It’s something we all enjoy. We practice compassion, empathy, understanding and love. Those are our core values and my team is just absolutely incredible. I couldn’t do it without them.” Stark is ebullient and exciting.
Having lived in Hailey for 30 years, she originally visited from Eugene, Oregon in 1995 to ski a season, and like so many, ended up staying. She loves biking, camping and anything outdoors but her deepest passion is in helping those in need.
You feel this when shopping in the Attic. Every member is gracious, gentle and works with an eye toward helping.
“Besides handling just shoes and clothing, we do what’s called necessity lists for our clients.
That means we come in and pick out anything from dishes to silverware to furniture to outfit their home. We work with them to make sure they have what they need when they graduate out of our transitional housing to go on their own. Not only do we take care of them in-house but when they leave.”
“This past year community members received 1,800 Attic Vouchers worth nearly $80,000! Buying second hand items is both affordable and makes us reconsider how we consume fashion.”
The Attic is dedicated to getting away from fast fashion (disposable, cheaply made clothing designed to be thrown away).”
With Stark’s enthusiasm, her team’s tireless efforts and the Advocate’s extraordinary commitment to helping trauma survivors and anyone in need, of any gender, sex or age, Hailey is home to one of the country’s greatest gifts of love.
