The portion of Silver Creek that is open to year round fishing continues to shine. There has been excellent dry fly activity on the creek most days, with a variety of insects hatching. BWOs, Midges, Caddis, and even a few Cailbaetis are on the menu. Long, light leaders are required to fool the creeks rainbows and browns given the very clear water. Terrestrials such as large beetles and ants have also been highly effective, and a large foam beetle trailed by a small nymph is particularly effective when no insects are hatching. During overcast days or low light conditions, fishing streamers and leeches has also been extremely productive.
The lower Big Lost River is also open to year-round fishing, and like Silver Creek has been extremely productive. Look for BWO and midge activity in the afternoons, and ample nymphing opportunities exist throughout the day, particularly in the fastest, deepest water.
Steelhead can still be caught on the upper Salmon, River near Stanley. This fishing remains open until the end of April. Large stonefly, nips and mentations are effective on the upper Salmon for the river’s steelhead
Now is the time to explore our local stillwater fisheries. Fishing with leech patterns and Chironomids is the way to target Trout in Magic, Mackay, and Littlewood reservoirs.
