The Upper Big Wood River Grange is hosting a contra dance on Friday, October 25 from 7–9:15 p.m. at the Grange Hall located at 609 South 3rd Avenue in Hailey. David Quinley will call the dances and lead dancers in circle, square and line sets. Live music will be provided by String Attached musicians & friends. “Strings Attached” is the same band from Twin Falls that used to come to the Grange Hall in the 1990s! Contra dance is a lively type of folk dance involving social interaction between a long line of dancers. And David also has us dance in squares and large circles. Dancers are invited to arrive by 6:45 p.m. for a quick review of basic steps. Tickets at the door are $15 for one adult, $25 for two adults (so bring a friend!), $5 for teens and free for kids accompanied by an adult. Please bring clean indoor shoes to avoid scratching the dance floor with dirt and gravel.
Dances at the Grange Hall are a family-friendly activity for all ages and everyone is welcome. First and foremost, this event is about people and community. Gather with neighbors, meet new friends and dance away. The event is organized by members of the Upper Big Wood River Grange which is celebrating 100 years in 2024. The National Grange has its roots in supporting American farming families and communities. Our local grange supports local food production, hosts the Wood River Seed Library, supports community organizations like 4-H, The Trailing of the Sheep Festival, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July pancake breakfast. The Grange also awards scholarships for high school seniors, and provides a space for meetings, dance classes, tai chi classes and other community functions, and a community garden. We foster local agriculture, local food economy and sustainable practices as well as gardening, seed saving, home cooking, sewing and other practical arts.
