The City of Carey, population 615, is more akin to a family than to a city of independent parts. The citizens of Carey are highly involved and committed to building a balanced workforce of industrial and agricultural influence here in the Wood River Valley.

During an interview, Mayor Randy Patterson, now in his third term as mayor, shared that while the work is plenty, the workers are few in Carey.

In 2018, the city had a record number of building permits applied for and will be downsizing its nine zoning districts into four.

“Shrinking the zoning districts will make it so people can do more with their property with less restrictions,” Patterson explained.

The housing code also changed in 2018. Previously, the largest housing unit allowed was a duplex, and now multifamily housing units are open for construction.

Carey also received a grant to widen the crosswalk to Carey School. They also installed a flashing light next to the crosswalk and radar feedback signs to check drivers’ speed.

“This has helped slow drivers down a lot,” Patterson said.

They also received a different grant for new playground equipment and movement of the volleyball courts to Carey City Park.

This year marks the 100th-year anniversary since Carey’s inception as a town. Patterson and the City Council are not certain what their celebration will look like, but they will likely capitalize on the existing annual community picnic, which takes place on the last Wednesday in June.

Carey also has a newly formed Chamber of Commerce to assist in community development.
