On the Sunday before Christmas, the Lincoln County Community Center was the center of a busy afternoon for many residents of Shoshone and surrounding communities. The Shoshone Project was hosting its fourth annual holiday food and clothing event. Families checked in and received two overflowing bags of food, including lots of food staples, fresh produce, a ham, delicious hot tamales, homemade cookies, and a holiday candle. All the kids received a present and the parents got to pick through a mountain of donated warm clothing.
The Shoshone Project started with two friends, Candice Stark, who lives in Ketchum, and Julia Borrayo Draper, who lives in Jerome. During the first winter of COVID-19 in 2020, Candice asked Julia what was going on with families in her neighborhood and Julia went knocking on doors to find out. The answer: it was tough. Some people were sick. Most weren’t working and families were struggling and needing help with rent, utilities and more. Candice sent an email to friends in the Wood River Valley and many wanted to help. That first winter, about 15 families received Thanksgiving meals, Christmas presents, donated warm clothing and financial assistance with rent and utilities.
This December was the fourth year of the Shoshone Project’s holiday food and clothing drive, which has grown to over 140 families (over 400 individuals).
The Shoshone Project’s mission is “Connecting Communities” and that is what they are doing. Many organizations and individuals volunteered to make this event successful, including the Kiwanis Club of Hailey, Sun Valley Community School, Starbucks Ketchum, Silver Creek Outfitters, Atkinsons’ Markets, ReMax Sun Valley, Mane Muse, The Mill, Bigwood Bakery, Chapter One Bookstore, Wood River Interfaith Council, Wood River Jewish Community, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, and Light on the Mountains Center for Spiritual Living.
