Nearly six years ago, Herbert Romero, a community organizer in Blaine County and founder of ProjecToolSuccess, was approached by Kiki Tidwell, president of Tidwell Idaho Foundation, with the idea for this column in order to reach Latinos across the Valley. Tidwell told him she wanted to sponsor the column and have it published through the Wood River Weekly, Romero said.
“She said, ‘It’ll be nice for you to highlight what the youth are doing here in the community. And for sure, any other Hispanic initiative or the Latino community. You run it, you lead it. I’m just going to finance it and, of course, I’ll be following up and reading the articles,’” Romero recalled.
Since then — from bilingual pandemic coverage, addressing housing issues and highlighting all parts of successful Hispanic/Latino individuals across the Wood River Valley — this column has been a need for its growing Spanish-speaking community. Because of this, the Nuestra Voz Cuenta column is hoping to campaign and raise $3,000 to continue to serve the Latino community.
“We’re people that are business-minded, professionals, directors, and artists, and we want to continue to showcase that,” Romero said. With each article costing around $65, the money would pay for each article for the next year and a half.
As one of the main writing contributors since 2020, I’ve seen the importance of bilingual coverage, especially when it came to the pandemic, and now with ongoing immigration fears.
I’ve also seen it become a place where young Latinos can share their voice and their story to their community.
This is not just a column where we share news, but where we can share and highlight our contributions to the Wood River Valley.

NUESTRA VOZ CUENTA
Hace casi 6 años, Kiki Tidwell, presidenta del Tidwell Idaho Foundation, se acercó a Herbert Romero, un organizador comunitario del condado de Blaine, y le propuso la idea de escribir la columna para llegar a los latinos de todo el valle.
Tidwell le dijo que quería patrocinar la columna y publicarla a través del Wood River Weekly, dijo Romero.
“Me dijo, ‘Sería bueno que destacaras lo que hacen los jóvenes aquí en la comunidad. Y, por supuesto, cualquier otra iniciativa hispana o de la comunidad latina. Tú la diriges. Yo solo la financiaré y, por supuesto, estaré al tanto y leyendo los artículos,’” recordó Romero.
Desde entonces, esta columna ha sido una necesidad para la comunidad latina.
Por eso, la columna “Nuestra Voz Cuenta” espera hacer campaña y recaudar $3,000 para continuar sirviendo a la comunidad latina.
“Somos gente de negocios, profesionales, directores y artistas y queremos seguir demostrando eso,” dijo Romero.
Como cada artículo costaba alrededor de 65 dólares, el dinero alcanzaría para pagar cada artículo durante el próximo año y medio.
Como uno de los principales colaboradores de escritura desde 2020, he visto la importancia de la cobertura bilingüe, especialmente cuando empezó la pandemia y ahora, con los continuos temores sobre la inmigración.
También lo he visto convertirse en un lugar donde los jóvenes latinos pueden compartir su voz y su historia con su comunidad.
Esta no es sólo una columna donde compartimos noticias, sino donde podemos compartir y resaltar nuestras contribuciones al Valle del Río Wood.
