On Tuesday, Aug. 30, residents in the Blaine County School District will vote on a Plant Facilities Levy. If approved, the levy funds would be used to improve, maintain, and repair existing buildings, including roof repairs and replacements. Funds would also be applied to safety and security systems, as well as providing LED lighting, heating, ventilation, and sanitation facilities, mechanical systems, appliances and technology upgrades.

The BCSD Board of Trustees established the School Plant Facilities Reserve Fund at its June 14 meeting. In doing so, the board determined there is a pressing need for a $5 million levy that, if approved (by at least 55% of voters), would remain in place for the next five years. A levy would have a property tax impact capped at $34.90 per year for every $100,000 of assessed taxable real property in the district. It would expire at the end of the 2026-27 school year.

The projects to be funded by the proposed Plant Facilities Levy were identified and prioritized through a comprehensive building conditions evaluation of all district facilities by the board’s Finance Advisory Committee. By acting now to obtain the required funds, the board says it will be able to address BCSD’s most pressing maintenance and improvement demands.
