Movie: ‘Dakota 38’

4:30-6PM / Magic Lantern / Ketchum

In 2005, Jim Miller, a Native American spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran, dreamt he was horseback riding across the great plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time, Jim knew nothing of the largest mass execution in U.S. history, ordered by Abraham Lincoln on Dec. 26, 1862. Four years later, Miller and a group of riders retraced the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule, S.D., to Mankato, Minn., to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution.

The screening of “Dakota 38” is part of The Center’s BIG IDEA project, “Unraveling: Reimagining the Colonization in the Americas.” For tickets and information, call (208) 726-9491 or visit sunvalleycenter.org.

Exhibition Tour
5:30PM / SV Center / Ketchum

The Center’s curators will discuss the history of colonization in the Americas, which has traditionally been taught as a straightforward story of European conquest of indigenous cultures and expansion across territories already settled by native peoples for millennia. What does this linear history omit? What are the possibilities for reimagining or reinterpreting colonial history from the indigenous point of view? This project revisits American history, offering alternative perspectives and narratives based both in fact and in fiction, including some rooted in the Wood River Valley.

The exhibition is part of The Center’s BIG IDEA project, “Unraveling: Reimagining the Colonization of the Americas.”
