We’ve got snow in the forecast which typically ushers in stable pressure. Look for fishing to improve in the afternoons, especially given the recent cold weather.
The big news is that Silver Creek downstream of the Highway 20 bridge remains open all year, with special regulations in place (consult the current Idaho Department of Fish & Game Fishing Regulations). The Nature Conservancy Silver Creek Preserve remains closed, with no regulation changes occurring. Feel free to stop into the shop or give us a call for more information.
Expect to concentrate your fishing on the Big Wood River and Silver Creek for the net few weeks, with the Big Lost River and the South Fork Boise River becoming viable as February transitions to March.
On Silver Creek, fishing with streamers and leeches continues to be the name of the game. You may see midge activity on the right days in the afternoon, so be prepared. Don’t fish The Creek in the winter without black leeches and our custom Sparkle Minnow.
For the Big Wood, nymphing is your most productive technique. Double nymph dogs consisting of a heavy lead fly (such as a big, heavy stonefly nymph) followed by a small zebra midge or attractor nymph will take plenty of fish. Always bring your favorite midge imitations, in case you find fish feeding on the surface.
As always, happy fishing!
