There’s just about one week remaining of our winter fishing season, and conditions couldn’t be better. Get out there and enjoy these nice March days and some of the absolute best fishing of the year. The midge activity has been fantastic on all of our area fisheries—Silver Creek, the Big Wood, the Big Lost, and the South Fork Boise—and the fish are hungry.
Flows on Silver Creek are at 180 CFS, and the water has dropped and cleared the last few days. The past two weeks have seen some epic streamer fishing, and baitfish and leech imitations will continue to produce until the season closes. There will be lots of midges and fish rising on the afternoons, and it’s very hard to beat a size 18–22 tie-down midge right now. Keep an eye out for BWOs, as well.
Fishing on the Big Wood River has been exceptional. As the rainbows prepare for the spring spawn, they put on the feed bag and are happy to eat a wide variety of flies; midges, BWOs, nymphs, and streamers are all producing. Don’t fish the Big Wood without a decent selection of Pat’s Rubber Legs, Zebra Midges, Copper Johns, Rainbow Warriors, Griffiths Gnats, Tie-Down Midges, and Parachute Adams.
The South Fork Boise and Big Lost are worth the trip as well, but be sure and check the USGS website for current river flows before making the trip.
Keep an eye out for rainbow trout spawning on all of our local waters, and give actively spawning fish a wide berth.
While getting outside, and enjoying the fishing and the sunshine is good for the body and soul, please be respectful of fellow anglers and give them some space. We’re in uncharted territory right now, so enjoy the fishing, but use good sense. Remember to be kind—and stay kind!
The season opener on Memorial Day weekend seems like a long way off, but it will be here before you know it. Keep an eye on our media for notice of upcoming events.
Stay safe, and happy fishing, everyone!
