{"id":9898,"date":"2018-10-10T18:50:33","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T18:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/?p=9898"},"modified":"2018-10-10T18:50:33","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T18:50:33","slug":"emma-lago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/10\/emma-lago\/","title":{"rendered":"Emma Lago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>BY EMILEE STRUSS<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9903\" src=\"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Emma-Lago_photo-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>Emma Lago, a senior at Wood River High School, currently takes AP Environmental Science, College English and College Algebra, as well as her favorite class, AP Government and Politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my favorite class because I enjoy learning the history of America, mainly so I can understand \u2018Saturday Night Live\u2019 skits,\u201d Lago said. \u201cI\u2019m not really into politics at all but I am learning a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with her declared disinterest in politics, Lago is also the chapter leader for Next Generation Politics, a club that was founded last fall by Gracie Doyle, a fellow student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really didn\u2019t like the club in the beginning,\u201d Lago said. \u201cBut then we started doing things like setting up voter registrations and we hosted a walkout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The walkout, conducted at WRHS last year, was a branch off of March For Our Lives, a reaction from the Parkland, Fla., school shooting. The youth chose to host the walkout against all violence in schools, instead of targeting guns.<\/p>\n<p>Lago is also in the environmental club known as WATER, and National Honor Society. In the winter, she plays on the U-19 Girls\u2019 hockey team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been playing hockey for seven years,\u201d Lago said. \u201cIt all started with a group of friends that just chose to sign up in first grade together and now we\u2019ve won two state tournaments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lago\u2019s team is hoping for a third state championship this year. In the summer, Lago travels to Camp Perkins, a Lutheran Outdoor Ministries camp for kids in Stanley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love working with kids,\u201d Lago said. \u201cI lead kids in games and Bible studies, and it\u2019s just so much fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, Lago is applying to colleges in search of screenwriting programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom helped me find Chapman University, in Orange, Calif.,\u201d Lago said. \u201cAnd the school is 10 minutes away from Disneyland, so that\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Lago prepares for her final moments in her high school career, she hopes students know that she\u2019s there for them.
