{"id":9749,"date":"2018-10-31T20:35:27","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T20:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/?p=9749"},"modified":"2018-10-31T20:35:27","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T20:35:27","slug":"jack-keating-excels-in-academics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/31\/jack-keating-excels-in-academics\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Keating Excels In Academics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><em>By Emilee Mae Struss<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9750\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9750\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9750\" src=\"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Jack_Keating-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Jack Keating<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jack Keating, a senior at Wood River High School, is currently taking a full course load of AP classes; maintains a 4.21 GPA; plays tennis six days a week; and is involved in debate, Model UN, Next Generation Politics and local political campaigns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI like politics because someday I\u2019d like to be able to make real change,\u201d Keating said. \u201cAnd I think I can do that through politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Keating moved to the Wood River Valley with his family when he was 5 years old, from Austin, Texas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He started playing tennis when he was 7 years old and hasn\u2019t put down the racket since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMy main passion,\u201d Keating said, \u201cis definitely tennis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He plays year-round and won a state championship last year in doubles. Keating is thankful for a local adult men\u2019s league that allows him to play with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThose guys are so much better than I,\u201d Keating said. \u201cAnd they make me better, so I\u2019m thankful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Keating seeks to be as academically sound as possible. This semester, he is enrolled in AP Government, AP Literature, debate, AP Environmental Science, and AP Comparative Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI am actually more into humanities,\u201d Keating said. \u201cMy friends are all math geniuses and I just find politics interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This year, Keating is involved in the legislative campaigns of Muffy Davis, Michelle Stennett and Sally Toone, as part of a fellowship program. Keating also has a community service project with The Community Library where he interviews and documents the atypical stories of how people came to the Valley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI love English and writing,\u201d Keating said, \u201cso I\u2019d like to get into speech writing as a potential career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Keating is inspired by his parents, both of whom he sees as politically cognizant individuals.
