Syringa Mountain School holds successful gala<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/b>Syringa Mountain School raised more than $80,000 at its Harvest Gala last week. The funds will be used to continue offering the Waldorf-inspired education at Blaine County\u2019s only tuition-free public charter school.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 150 people attended the gala at River Run Lodge.<\/p>\n

Idaho Insurance Specialists, Idaho Lumber and several Syringa Mountain School families sponsored the gala. It featured live music provided by soul hip-hop fusion band Dirty Revival. DJ Johnny V was the master of ceremonies and cowboy Joe Hutchins served as auctioneer.<\/p>\n

\u201cSyringa Mountain School is a unique group of\u00a0compassionate, loving and caring people all\u00a0excited about\u00a0learning,\u201d said Christine Fonner, director of school. \u201cGreat\u00a0learning is connected to great teaching and educating those around us. We thoroughly enjoyed sharing and teaching the community about our school and\u00a0Waldorf education leading up to and during our Harvest Gala.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Hailey Post Office Employee Dies<\/b><\/p>\n

He was always there with a friendly word for his customers.<\/p>\n

Brian Douglas Shields, 59, of Hailey, and originally from Pennsylvania, died Thursday, Oct. 13, after being life-flighted to St. Luke\u2019s Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls. He had worked at the Hailey Post Office since 2004.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was like \u2018Cheers,\u2019 where everyone knows your name,\u201d said Hailey Postmaster Ken Quigley. \u201cThat was Brian.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his spare time, Shields was a football and softball referee.<\/p>\n

There will be a celebration of life at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 at The Life Church, next to Albertsons in Hailey.<\/p>\n

Shields is survived by his wife, Judy. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rosenau Funeral Home in Twin Falls.<\/p>\n

Candidate Schedules Meetings<\/b><\/p>\n

Irene Healy, a candidate for representative of Zone 3 for the Blaine County School District Board of Trustees, will hold four open gatherings for the public to ask questions and discuss district matters. The gatherings will be held from 11 a.m.\u20131 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 at the Hailey Public Library; from 7\u20139 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 at KB’s in Hailey; from 5\u20136:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Bellevue Public Library; and from 11 a.m.\u20131 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at The Community Library in Ketchum.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor The Love Of Lamb\u201d Winners Announced<\/i><\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the 20th annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival celebrated the 150-plus-year tradition of trailing sheep from high summer pastures in the mountains down through the Wood River Valley to traditional winter grazing and lambing areas in the south.<\/p>\n

This year, 10 restaurants participated in the \u201cFor The Love of Lamb\u201d event Friday during the Festival, which provided free lamb bites to hundreds of participants. Vintage Restaurant, in Ketchum, won Best Overall Taste for 2016.<\/p>\n

Other winners were: <\/b>The Cornerstone Bar & Grill for Best Comfort Food; Cristina\u2019s Restaurant & Bakery for Most Flavorful; Enoteca for Best Presentation; Iconoclast Books & Caf\u00e9 for The One I Want to Recreate \u2013 Lamb Lasagna; Rasberrys for Best Comfort Food \u2013 Roast Lamb; Rominna\u2019s \u2013 Consolation Award; The Sawtooth Club \u2013 Best Grilled \u2013 Denver-Style Lamb Ribs; Town Square Tavern \u2013 Best Regional Cuisine \u2013 Moroccan Lamb Tagine; Warfield Distillery & Brewery \u2013 Most Creative \u2013 Lamb-chetta.

Caritas Chorale to hold holiday performances<\/b><\/p>\n

Caritas Chorale will hold three holiday performances in December. The approximately 90-member chorus will return to St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Saturday, Dec. 3, with a Holiday Sing-Along as a benefit for The Hunger Coalition. \u201cO Holy Night,\u201d a collection of carols written and arranged by John Rutter, will be presented Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec.11 with the Wood River High School Chamber Orchestra and the Wood River Orchestra.<\/p>\n

Rehearsals are at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, downstairs, Mondays, and occasional Tuesdays, at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.<\/p>\n

Voters can vote early at county courthouses<\/b><\/p>\n

Early voting in person has started at the Blaine County Courthouse in Hailey. Voters will have until Friday, Nov. 4 to vote in person. All courthouses in Idaho will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Absentee voting is still available until Friday, Oct. 28 by 5 p.m. Forms are available at political offices, or at the Blaine County Courthouse, 206 S. 1st Ave., Hailey. Political sign theft has become rampant<\/b><\/p>\n

Blaine County Democrats say political yard signs worth hundreds of dollars have been stolen in the last few weeks. Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter said the thefts seem be a grab-and-go situation. All incidents should be reported to the Hailey Police Department at\u00a0(208) 788-3531,\u00a0or the Blaine County Sheriff\u2019s Office at\u00a0(208) 788-5555.<\/p>\n

Idaho Power submits two filings <\/b><\/p>\n

Idaho Power Company (IPC) submitted two filings to the Idaho Public Utilities Commission related to the company\u2019s North Valmy Power Plant in Nevada, and revisions to the company\u2019s depreciation rates.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 Idaho Power owns 50 percent of the coal-fired North Valmy Power Plant near Battle Mountain, Nev. The Valmy filing requests adjusting customer pricing to reflect the accelerated depreciable life for the power plant. Currently, the depreciable life for Valmy is based on a depreciation schedule that ends in 2031 for Unit 1 and 2035 for Unit 2. The proposed depreciation schedule would move the date of full depreciation up to 2025 for both units.<\/p>\n

Idaho Power\u2019s 2016 assessment of Valmy concluded it may not benefit customers from an economic and electric reliability perspective to operate the facility beyond 2025.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 If the proposals are approved by the IPUC, the price Idaho customers pay for electric service will increase by about $35.2 million beginning June 1, 2017.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 Idaho Power\u2019s filing is a proposal subject to public review and approval by the IPUC. Copies of the application are available to the public at the IPUC offices at 472 W. Washington St., Boise, Idaho 83702, Idaho Power offices or on Idaho Power\u2019s website, idahopower.com<\/span>, or the IPUC website, puc.idaho.gov<\/span>.<\/p>\n
