But safety should always be your top concern as little witches, zombies, and superheroes roam the neighborhood after dark. Follow these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Get ready.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Make your home safe for trick-or-treaters. Replace outside burned-out lightbulbs, and remove anything a child could trip over such as toys, bikes, and lawn decorations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Place your pumpkin on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and not on a porch or any path where visitors may pass close by. Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Consider giving out non-food treats, such as coloring books or pens and pencils.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>What to wear?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Wear face paint or makeup instead of a mask, which can restrict vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u2022 Wear a light-colored, flame-retardant costume decorated with reflective tape or stickers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Wear sturdy shoes that fit well to prevent trips and falls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 If a sword, cane or stick is part of a costume, make sure it\u2019s not sharp or long. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Don\u2019t use decorative contact lenses without a prescription. They can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Trick-or-treating<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Only trick-or-treat in familiar areas that are well lit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Carry a flashlight or glow stick to increase visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Only go to homes with a porch light on, and never enter a home or car for a treat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Carry a cellphone for quick communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Review with children how to call 911 if they have an emergency or become lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Walk\u2014don\u2019t run\u2013\u2013and never dart out into the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Cross streets at corners; use signals and crosswalks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Walk on sidewalks or paths, or as far to the left as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Make eye contact with drivers and watch for cars that are turning or backing up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 If you\u2019re driving, slow down and exercise even more caution than usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 If older children are going alone, plan and review their route, and agree on a specific time when they should return home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Inspect your children\u2019s treats before they eat them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2022 Ration treats for the days and weeks following Halloween.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>It\u2019s your life. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>We help you live it.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY ST.
