As part of St. Thomas Playhouse\u2019s Family Main Stage project, a large ensemble of all ages will grace the stage at nexStage Theatre in Ketchum to bring this historic piece of theatre to life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Many in the show\u2019s creative team remember their first encounter with the 1965 film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhen \u2018The Sound of Music\u2019 first came out, my aunt and my sister went to the movies every Saturday for three months to see it because it was that amazing,\u201d chuckled director R.L. Rowsey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cGrowing up in an age when there weren\u2019t a lot of movies coming out that were family friendly, musical theatre events were huge when they were on TV,\u201d choreographer Sara Gorby explained. \u201cOnce a year they would have \u2018The Sound of Music\u2019 or \u2018The Wizard of Oz\u2019 on TV and you\u2019d sit down as a family, and it was very much about gathering to enjoy the experience as a group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMy mother taught elementary school music and one of her first classes would be her sitting with a guitar singing \u2018Do-Re-Mi\u2019 with the children,\u201d smiled Meredith Skillman, who plays Maria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The classic story has touched the hearts of countless individuals worldwide through its unforgettable songs, characters and themes. Set in Austria during World War II, the musical follows a young woman studying to become a nun who is assigned to be a governess to seven precocious children. Photo by Heather Black<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><\/b>\u201cI think the heart of the piece is about making sacrifices,\u201d Gorby said. \u201cThese people chose to do something really hard and chose to do what was right, in a time when that wasn\u2019t easy. They knew there were other places in the world where they could have the life that they wanted to have, and knew that home was where their family was, not where their house was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe mountains are such a force for everyone in the play, and I think they\u2019re representative of the great challenge each character must face,\u201d Skillman said. \u201cThere\u2019s a great quote from a mountaineer that asks, \u2018Why climb a mountain in the first place?\u2019 And he says, \u2018Because when you have gone up top, you can see what is below.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b> <\/b>Working with such a wide array of ages and community members on this piece has been rewarding for Rowsey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b> <\/b>\u201cOne of the biggest gifts for me has been working with the children in the cast\u2013their instincts are amazing and they bring such honesty to their work,\u201d he said. \u201cThe piece affirms to me that there is always hope and that love can win, and that\u2019s a great thing to have for our country right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Gorby hopes that the youth of the community, in particular, will take advantage of seeing the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cComing out to the theatre is a really special gift for a child, especially this musical,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019ll hardly ever get to see \u2018The Sound of Music\u2019 live, so don\u2019t miss the opportunity to see such a beautiful production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Tickets for \u201cThe Sound of Music\u201d are $25 for adults and $15 for kids.
