{"id":7932,"date":"2016-06-17T18:52:10","date_gmt":"2016-06-17T18:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idsunmedia.com\/?p=7932"},"modified":"2016-06-17T18:52:10","modified_gmt":"2016-06-17T18:52:10","slug":"wyatt-landrum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2016\/06\/17\/wyatt-landrum\/","title":{"rendered":"WYATT LANDRUM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Working in Alaska with <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>fishing guide company<\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">BY JONATHAN KANE<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">W<\/span><span class=\"s2\">yatt Landrum, a graduating senior at Wood River High School, grew up in the Wood River Valley and has a passion for the outdoors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">That\u2019s probably why he\u2019s so excited to be leaving for Alaska this week for the summer to work with a fishing guide company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIt\u2019s a dream come true,\u201d Landrum said. \u201cI\u2019ll be what is called a dock hand and we will be on the Togiak River. I\u2019ll be helping with the clients and all their needs and assisting on a variety of tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to go to Alaska for fishing,\u201d Landrum said. \u201cA close friend of mine worked as a commercial fisherman and he told me all about it and it got me really excited. I also have a family member up there that is a helicopter pilot. Plus, I\u2019ll be doing what I love \u2013 fly fishing for salmon and trout!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cMy dad started taking me fishing when I was about 9 years old,\u201d Landrum said. \u201cI started fly fishing at about 15. My best memory was when I caught my first brown trout at Silver Creek. It was really exciting because it\u2019s a unique fish with a unique pattern and really fun to catch because they put up a good fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cLearning was pretty hard,\u201d he said. \u201cIt took a few months to adapt to it and learn how to cast and tie knots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI got a fly-fishing kit for my birthday and it\u2019s going pretty good. I just tied my first brown drake fly that I\u2019m using at Silver Creek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIt\u2019s so beautiful down there and it\u2019s really fun because of the slow-moving water,\u201d Landrum said. \u201cIt\u2019s also incredibly quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Landrum also likes to hunt and used the principles of Native Americans for his senior project, creating tools based on their technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI made three arrows and a spear the same way Native Americans created them,\u201d he said. \u201cI got the idea from a friend that is a primitive bow hunter. He has experience and he knows what he\u2019s doing and how to get it done. I really look up to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe arrows were created from bamboo and I made and sharpened an obsidian tip. I attached the tip, after sharpening it with antler tips, with sinew from an animal and pinesap to attach it. Each one took about five hours to make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThey turned out great,\u201d Landrum said. \u201cThey flew really straight and spun naturally.
