{"id":7800,"date":"2016-06-03T20:07:37","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T20:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idsunmedia.com\/?p=7800"},"modified":"2016-06-03T20:07:37","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T20:07:37","slug":"callie-bourgette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2016\/06\/03\/callie-bourgette\/","title":{"rendered":"CALLIE BOURGETTE"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Passionate about human rights<\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">BY JONATHAN KANE<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">C<\/span><span class=\"s2\">allie Bourgette, a Sage School senior and member of the Compassionate Young Leaders, says she is passionate about human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI\u2019ve always found it incredibly interesting,\u201d she said in an interview. \u201cSo many people are caught up in making money that we really need to step back and look at the problems in the world that affect us like social issues, sexism, poverty and racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI think we are focused too much on trying to better ourselves and our situation in the world. It\u2019s all about \u2018me me me\u2019 and we need to be helping other people and putting ourselves in their shoes and empathizing with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cYou just need to get involved in your own community and what is happening there,\u201d Bourgette said. \u201cPrograms like The Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and The Hunger Coalition need people to help out and get involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">To that end, Bourgette volunteers at The Advocates and interns as part of Advocates ETC [Every teen hs a Choice], which is part of the organization\u2019s education program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe help educate the community about violence prevention and healthy relationships,\u201d she said. \u201cWe go into the schools and talk to the kids and tell them what a healthy relationship is and what to do if they are in an unhealthy relationship and to give them resources to get help and get out of the relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cA healthy relationship is one where the partners communicate with each other and are empathetic to one another and that there is trust,\u201d Bourgette said. \u201cThose are the biggest three. In an unhealthy relationship, you are not comfortable and you have to trust your gut. If you can feel that it\u2019s wrong, then it probably is wrong. Then you want to get help and talk to someone that you trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIt\u2019s so important to have someone to talk to,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter that, the next step is either to get out or talk to your partner and figure it out. If it\u2019s really bad, you need to get professional help. From the outside, though, it is hard to truly understand what is going on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">As part of the Compassion Young Leaders program, Bourgette traveled last year to Ladok, India, on a humanitarian mission.
