{"id":7775,"date":"2016-05-27T18:01:38","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T18:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idsunmedia.com\/?p=7775"},"modified":"2016-05-27T18:01:38","modified_gmt":"2016-05-27T18:01:38","slug":"fifth-grader-wins-do-the-right-thing-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2016\/05\/27\/fifth-grader-wins-do-the-right-thing-award\/","title":{"rendered":"FIFTH GRADER WINS  \u2018DO THE RIGHT THING\u2019 AWARD"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Program recognizes positive <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>behavior by young people<\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">BY WEEKLY SUN STAFF<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The Hailey fire and police departments, together with the Blaine County School District, have announced the 2016 awards for the \u201cDo The Right Thing\u201d program, which is intended to reinforce positive behavior by youngsters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">The top award went to Korbin Heitzman, who was nominated for the program by his Hailey Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Jenica Alexander. Other nominees were Gina Pulleiro, a student at Wood River High School, and Hallie Taylor, a student at Wood River Middle School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">The students were recognized at a Hailey Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event on May 19. The BAH was hosted by KECH Radio and The Weekly Sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">The program is also supported by several local businesses and organizations, including KB\u2019s, ESS Eyewear, Board Bin, Bigwood 4 Cinema, Wiseguy Pizza, Shorty\u2019s, Hailey Rotary, Hawley Graphics, Windy City Graphics, Zions Bank and the Hailey Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Do The Right Thing is a national program that was formed in Hailey in 2014. Nationally, the program recognizes thousands of youngsters who have performed acts or exhibited behavior of \u201cdoing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Alexander described Heitzman, this year\u2019s local winner, as an \u201cexceptional member of our valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\u201cKorbin is the most positive, natural leader I\u2019ve ever seen in my 15 years of teaching,\u201d Alexander wrote in her nomination. \u201cHis ability to rally his classmates to succeed and do their best is amazing. I have full confidence that if I had to step out of class, he would take charge and keep everyone learning and on task.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Also as part of the program, Carlos Gonzalez, the 2015 local top award winner, was recently awarded a $500 scholarship. Gonzalez was chosen last year because of his commitment to the community and his passion for soccer, where he assists with a local adult league.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">The program is now accepting new nominations for Do The Right Thing.
