Skijoring: Where Rodeo Meets Recklessness on Ice<\/strong>
\nIf you haven\u2019t heard of skijoring by now, check your
\nsense of adventure, because what unfolds on that
\nquarter-mile strip of frozen earth is equal parts lunacy
\nand poetry\u2014cowboys and cowgirls thundering across
\nice on thousand-pound horses, dragging purely athletic
\nskiers behind them with insane speed.
\nThe skier is holding nothing but a rope. No harness,
\nno safety line, no reasonable explanation for why this
\nseemed like a good idea to our frontier ancestors, yet
\ncenturies later, we\u2019re still doing it and loving every
\nsecond.<\/p>\n

Controlled Chaos<\/strong>
\nPicture a narrow corridor of snow, barely wider
\nthan a logging road. Add small jumps, and tight turns
\ndesigned to test both equine agility and human grip
\nstrength. This is simply a horse at full gallop, towing
\na skier whose entire existence depends on upper body
\nstrength and faith.
\nThis is skijoring! Put on every year in Bellevue, the
\nWood River Extreme Ski Joring Association (WRESJA)
\nis a magnificent organization upholding tradition
\nand excitement. Last year was a doozy!
\nThe riders aren\u2019t just steering, they\u2019re calculating
\nvelocity, trajectory, and the exact moment their skier
\nmight eat it on the back turn. The magnificent horses,
\nbred for power, aren\u2019t just running; they\u2019re zipping at
\n30 miles per hour while the skiers hold, simply, a rope.
\nNo poles for balance. No brakes. Just core strength, leg
\ndrive, and the will to explore terminal velocity.
\nIt\u2019s the kind of skill you can\u2019t teach. You either have
\nit, or you watch.
\nInjuries have happened before with, yes, bones
\nbroken. But that\u2019s not been for some time, although
\nit could happen again! Which is certainly part of the
\ndraw for the wagering types. Everyone else is cheering
\nthe show.<\/p>\n

\nNeither Rodeo, or Show, Something Wilder<\/strong>
\nThis isn\u2019t a rodeo, though the crowd energy suggests
\notherwise. It\u2019s not a dressage exhibition, though the
\nhorses do look brilliant. It\u2019s not X-Games, though the
\nrisk profile suggests it should be.
\nSkijoring exists in its own category: extreme speed
\nplus agricultural tradition, wrapped in a type of Americana
\nthat doesn\u2019t apologize for being absurd. It\u2019s a
\ncowboy\u2019s \u2018Let\u2019er buck!\u2019 to winter winsome weathering.
\nIt\u2019s genuinely one of the best events you\u2019ll witness
\nall year. Last year was a blast and we had tons of snow.
\nThis year? Not so much. It\u2019s February and the thermometer
\nshould read \u201cSNOW.\u201d But it hasn\u2019t yet this
\nstrange year.
\nThat\u2019s why WRESJA has a backup plan
\nThey\u2019re throwing a party with food trucks, drinks
\nand music to dance to. As treasurer of the WRESJA,
\nMichelle Bobbit explains, \u201cWe\u2019re hauling about 40
\ntruckloads [of snow] in. Lundsford [Excavation] is
\nhelping us. And we\u2019re hauling it from Ketchum down
\nto help build the track, providing the weather holds and
\nit doesn\u2019t get too warm or start raining.
\n\u201cRight now it looks like we\u2019re going to be okay.
\nSo we\u2019re planning on having the race. But if by some
\nchance we don\u2019t, then we\u2019re thinking of having River
\nSage Stables reserved. And have Kim\u2019s Talking Band
\nthere with a dance floor. We\u2019ll have Big John BBQ catering
\nit. And have a little no-show cancellation party
\nwith some raffle items.
