Right?
Yesterday, while having breakfast, I wondered if the cereal and milk that I was eating came from Idaho farms or dairies. Statistics show that an estimated 43% of workers in the agricultural industry in Idaho are undocumented. So, does that mean I’m eating partially “undocumented” cereal? Nearly 90% of our dairy workers are “undocumented.” Am I also eating partially undocumented milk?
Undocumented doesn’t mean invisible! For years, most of our Idaho politicians have ignored the contributions that our Latino and Hispanic workers have made to the economy of Idaho. But, now a new government is telling Idahoans we can do without the same migrants that we hired just 30 years ago. Really?
Today, many of our neighbors, whether legal or not, are living in fear of being stopped, jailed and sent to another country. Parents are reluctant to send their kids off to school thinking they may never see them again.
We can resist this with action. Attend biracial, tricolor cultural events. Voice outrage when we witness racially profiled arrests. Verbally (calmly, without anger) push back on racist speech on the internet.
But, these actions mean nothing without the correct volition. It must come from compassion to protect the Hispanic and Latino community from danger. Some of their fears can be reduced by treating them as part of the Wood River Valley community. Which they are. Part of our community is not healthy until ALL of our community is healthy.
I’m going to resist a local or federal government telling me how to label another human being. Help those that feel invisible, to be visible.
We’ve got your back.

Nuestra Voz CuentA
¡Indocumentado no significa invisible!
Asistamos a eventos culturales birraciales y tricolores.

BY MARC LONGLEY Our Voice Counts Sometimes, you think the silliest things at weird times.
