{"id":22086,"date":"2025-03-05T00:51:12","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T07:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/?p=22086"},"modified":"2025-03-03T13:57:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T20:57:31","slug":"childrens-feelings-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/childrens-feelings-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"Children\u2019s  Feelings Matter!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>BY NICOLE FOY<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>OUR VOICE COUNTS<\/strong><br \/>\nI came to Idaho in 2017, where I worked first at the Idaho Press and then the Idaho Statesman, writing about Latino issues, immigration and local government around Idaho.<br \/>\nI visited the Wood River Valley for the first time in 2019, to write about how bilingual education in the local schools was helping Latino students find success in school, and eventually college. My coworkers and I reached out to community leaders like Herbert Romero for help, and he connected us to so many wonderful students, teachers, families and community members who welcomed us into their homes and lives.<br \/>\nAfter I left Idaho, I moved to Texas, then California, then New York, always writing about Latino and immigrant communities. I\u2019m now writing about immigration for the national investigative outlet ProPublica.<br \/>\nBut I don\u2019t want Idaho\u2019s stories to be left out, or forgotten.<br \/>\nThings are changing so quickly\u2014almost every day\u2014and it can be hard to know what the President or local Idaho lawmakers will decide to do next on immigration policies that affect so many Idaho families. School can already be so stressful for students. But some immigrant families have difficult choices ahead of them, and plans to make, as they prepare for the possibility that they or a loved one may be detained or deported.\u00a0Worrying about what will happen to parents, siblings, family members or friends without legal status can add an even greater mental health burden to students.<br \/>\nI\u2019m writing about how all this stressful news is affecting Latino students and their families, and have once again asked Romero to help me find families in the Wood River Valley who want to share their stories.<br \/>\nHow are you protecting your mental health during these stressful times?
