It won’t actually be on the radio but on the stage of the Liberty. The play is being directed by Veronica Moonhill who you may remember from Hammond’s Castle.

Naomi McDougall Jones, who adapted the original Carroll story, was the mind behind Hammond’s Castle adaptation which was done in similar fashion last year. “We brought in a Foley artist to come on stage with the actors and make all the sound effects in real time. So the actors are at music stands on the stage playing a bunch of different characters. It’s exactly how they used to make old radio plays, but it’s like you’re getting a behind the scenes look at that on stage.”

So yes, in something of a meta inception you’ll be watching the creation of the classic story while your mind’s eye is open to fantasize and draw characters along with the sound.

The original, timeless, classic penned by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) in 1865 hits harder than ever in 2024. The very phrase associated with Alice’s adventure “going down the rabbit hole” has become a slang moniker for doing research on anything or simply becoming interested in a topic, especially if done on the internet. YouTube rabbit holes, anyone?

As we all likely remember, Alice at the behest of a harried white rabbit, falls down a rabbit hole. As time and space distort she meets a motley cast of characters including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. Any number of interpretations of the book’s meaning can be found on a YouTube search (rabbit hole) including intriguing conspiracies and interesting connections to mathematics as it is generally well known that Carroll was a mathematician. One interesting bit is how, in the Disney cartoon, it is Alice’s cat Dinah who causes her to fall into the rabbit hole. And that’s also where the beauty and ingenuity of this production shine.

“What’s fun is that the Disney movie kind of watered down the Lewis Carroll story. You know, it took out a lot of the weirder parts, obviously because of the era it was in and, of course, because it’s Disney. So in writing the adaptation, it was really fun to get to put some of the stranger and more fantastical parts of the Lewis Carroll story back in. So I think it’s going to be a really good blend for families and kids who have seen the Disney movie. There will be the parts that they recognize and expect, but then there will be these other parts that they may not have ever known about or will get to be surprised by.”

Very exciting stuff!

Ever forward thinking, the producers have upped the ante. Jones explains, “We have two separate casts, one is an English speaking cast and one’s a Spanish speaking cast. The first three performances on Friday night, Saturday matinee, and Saturday evening are going to be in English with the first cast.

“At 2 p.m. on December 8th our Spanish cast is going to perform it entirely in Spanish and that performance is free and open to the public. It’ll be kind of a holiday festival and that performance will have free refreshments, cookies and drinks afterwards.”

The Liberty Theater is quickly becoming the most interesting venue in all of the Valley. Their music programming with the Battle of the Bands and wild, underground acts along with unique, independent films play brilliantly with retrospective classic films and modern fare like Dune.

REMINDER: People do have to sign up for tickets ahead of time through the website but the December 8th Spanish performance/party is totally free!

Be sure to visit libertytheaterhailey.com to sign up for either the paid or free Spanish version. Tickets must be acquired to inform the theater of occupancy.

Alice In Wonderland BY ISAIAH FRIZZELL The ever inventive programmers at the new Liberty Theater in Hailey (shoutout Pete Vallimarescu and crew) are doing a limited showing of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland – in both English and Spanish!
