For about 10 days in June, I went to Washington, D.C., for the POLITICO Journalism Institute Program, where I was one out of 16 students selected to attend workshops and network with top-writing journalists. Through their empowering words, I finally realized what drove me most passionately.<\/p>\n

Local journalism.<\/p>\n

Before attending this program, I wasn\u2019t exactly sure if I wanted to head into a big newsroom in a city, but after hearing their advice and talking to journalists from newsrooms like POLITICO and NPR, I realized how important local journalism is right now, especially in small towns where it\u2019s nice to be able to know who is in your local newsroom.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m now working at the Times-News in Twin Falls, Idaho, writing specifically about Hispanic life and affairs and I couldn\u2019t ask for a better first job out of college. I\u2019ve been learning, challenged and am constantly curious to see what I can do to carve this beat.<\/p>\n

Durante unos diez d\u00edas en junio, fui a Washington, D.C., para el Programa del Instituto de Periodismo de POLITICO, donde fui una de 16 estudiantes seleccionados para asistir a talleres y establecer contactos con los mejores periodistas escritores. A trav\u00e9s de sus palabras de empoderamiento, finalmente me di cuenta de lo que me apasionaba m\u00e1s.<\/p>\n

Antes de asistir a este programa, no estaba exactamente segura de si quer\u00eda ir a una gran sala de redacci\u00f3n en una ciudad, pero despu\u00e9s de escuchar consejos y hablar con periodistas de salas de redacci\u00f3n como POLITICO y NPR, me di cuenta de lo importante que es el periodismo local en este momento, especialmente en pueblos peque\u00f1os donde es bueno poder saber qui\u00e9n est\u00e1 en su sala de redacci\u00f3n local.<\/p>\n

Ahora estoy trabajando en el Times-News en Twin Falls, Idaho, escribiendo espec\u00edficamente sobre la vida y los asuntos hispanos y no podr\u00eda pedir un mejor primer trabajo fuera de la universidad.
