Photo credit: Justin Astuhuaman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p4\">A 17-year-old student from Wood River High School has been involved in the community through known organizations like The Hunger Coalition, St. Luke\u2019s and even The Advocates ETC (Every Teen Counts) program as an intern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">But it wasn\u2019t always that way for Joseph Egoavil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know how to get involved at first,\u201d Egoavil said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">WIth the help of his mother getting involved in the community and the support from The Advocates when his family lived there for a while, he decided he wanted to give back \u201cfor the good of his heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Although he has been a community leader from the start of his high school years, Egoavil credits some of his advocacy and the recent work he has done with Herbert Romero, outreach community organizer, and emphasizes the importances of saying \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to look out for yourself and for what you believe,\u201d Egoavil said. \u201cThink for yourself and not for your friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">In addition, he and other ETC interns wrote a book about healthy relationships, including breakups, different stages in denial and other resources in intimate relationships; he noted this as one of the most \u201cmemorable moments with The Advocates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cThis book managed to reach out to different states,\u201d Egoavil said. \u201cHealth classes have also used this book, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Graduation for Egoavil is just around the corner and he hopes that with his leadership and his accomplishments, other Hispanic\/Latinx students will follow his lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cThere\u2019s always this stigma that Hispanic\/Latinx students aren\u2019t good at school or are troublemakers,\u201d Egoavil said. \u201cRemember that what\u2019s trending doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>NUESTRA VOZ CUENTA<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Un estudiante de 17 a\u00f1os de Wood River High School ha estado involucrado en la comunidad a trav\u00e9s de organizaciones conocidas como la Coalici\u00f3n contra el Hambre, St Luke e incluso The Advocates ETC (Cada adolescente cuenta) programa como interno.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Pero no siempre fue as\u00ed para Joseph Egoavil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cAl principio no sab\u00eda c\u00f3mo participar,\u201d dijo Egoavil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Con la ayuda de su madre involucr\u00e1ndose en la comunidad y el apoyo de The Advocates cuando su familia vivi\u00f3 all\u00ed por un tiempo, decidi\u00f3 que quer\u00eda retribuir \u201cpor el bien de su coraz\u00f3n.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cNo tengas miedo de mirarte por ti mismo y por lo que crees,\u201d dijo Egoavil. \u201cPiensa por ti mismo y no por tus amigos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Adem\u00e1s, \u00e9l y otros internos parte de ETC escribieron un libro sobre relaciones saludables que incluye rupturas, diferentes etapas en la negaci\u00f3n y otros recursos en las relaciones \u00edntimas; se\u00f1al\u00f3 que este era uno de los \u201cmomentos memorables\u201d con el programa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cEste libro logr\u00f3 llegar a diferentes estados,\u201d dijo Egoavil. \u201cLas clases de salud tambi\u00e9n han utilizado este libro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">La graduaci\u00f3n de Egoavil est\u00e1 a la vuelta de la esquina y espera que con su liderazgo y sus logros, otros estudiantes hispanos\/latinos sigan su ejemplo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cSiempre existe el estigma de que los estudiantes hispanos\/latinos no son buenos en la escuela o son alborotadores,\u201d dijo Egoavil. \u201cRecuerda que lo que son las \u2018modas\u2019 no importan.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY MONICA CARRILLO OUR VOICE COUNTS A 17-year-old student from Wood River High School has been involved in the community through known organizations like The Hunger Coalition, St. Luke\u2019s and even The Advocates ETC (Every Teen Counts) program as an intern.
