Being here at first was very nerve-wracking and daunting, especially as the flights to Puerto Rico started to feel exceptionally long. Nevertheless, these past couple of weeks exploring the island has been tiring, hectic, confusing but overall very, very fun.

However, none of this would have happened without the assistance of Mary Fauth, executive director of the Blaine County Charitable Fund, other former members and current members of the Blaine County Charitable Fund, and Herbert Romero, community organizer in Blaine County.

I was told of excessive payments after applying, accepting and picking my courses for the university I am attending in Puerto Rico that neither I nor my parents could pay. As an undocumented member in my family, I, like others that apply to BCCF, aren’t used to getting help or accepting it because it’s so unfamiliar.

The political system sometimes makes us feel like we don’t deserve that kind of help, especially with financial assistance, whether that be for students like FAFSA or housing assistance because of our lack of Social Security numbers.

I am so incredibly thankful for the support I have gotten throughout these past couple of years with my studies and for people like Romero and Fauth who have endlessly helped me grow my leadership, extend my knowledge and experience life in a way I wouldn’t have ever imagined as an immigrant in a Republican state.

NUESTRA VOZ CUENTA

BY MONICA CARRILLO OUR VOICE COUNTS I embarked on a new journey this spring semester on my own by taking a study-abroad experience in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
