{"id":15918,"date":"2021-04-21T01:23:38","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T01:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/?p=15918"},"modified":"2021-04-20T20:05:27","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T20:05:27","slug":"rent-your-home-tax-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/21\/rent-your-home-tax-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Rent Your Home Tax-Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><em>BY ANNA &amp; MICHELLE<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">There is a little-known provision in the tax code that allows homeowners to rent their principal\u00a0residence or second home for up to 14 days a year without having to recognize the income.\u00a0In this situation, the taxpayer does not deduct the rental expenses associated with the income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">There is no restriction on how much you earn.\u00a0If your first or second home is in a desirable area where people are looking for short-term rentals, it could provide a windfall to the homeowner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">In cities where any big sports championships are played, there could be a market for a temporary rental of a home.\u00a0Events like PGA tournaments, college basketball tournaments, bowl games, NFL playoffs and others can create a demand for this type of rental.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">For instance, there are people in Augusta, Georgia, who rent their homes during the Master\u2019s golf tournament each year.\u00a0There are not a lot of hotel rooms in the area relative to the number of people who usually attend in non-pandemic years and the homes can fetch a nice daily rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">There can be confusion about the different types of properties and what constitutes a home.
