{"id":13879,"date":"2020-08-12T00:12:22","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T06:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/?p=13879"},"modified":"2020-08-12T00:12:22","modified_gmt":"2020-08-12T06:12:22","slug":"the-giving-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2020\/08\/12\/the-giving-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"The Giving Farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><em>BY THE SENIOR CONNECTION<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13880\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13880\" src=\"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/dick-with-compost-400x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dick Springs displays a bin of Senior Connection lunch leftovers that will eventually become compost in The Giving Farm garden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p2\">Senior Connection friends Dick and Melinda Springs, and Mardi Shepard, put their heads together in an effort to stay emotionally and physically healthy this spring and created a \u201cGiving Farm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Not only did it give them something to do as they socially distanced when Blaine County was hard hit with COVID-19, it also allowed Melinda to create something out of a corner of the ranch that she had longed to clean up and make productive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">What they have created is a beautiful small farm\u2014from seed, all organic\u2014that helps benefit the kitchen here at The Senior Connection. They have labeled themselves \u201cseniors growing vegetables for seniors.\u201d They are assisted by another friend, Peggy Grove, who has earned the title \u201cthe transplant queen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Tomatoes, potatoes, berries and cabbage are just a few of the wonderful things headed to Chef Brian\u2019s kitchen. The first delivery was collard greens, which Brian served the next day with bacon, garlic and lemon and that was a huge hit with our lunch crowd.
