I am often asked, \u201cWhat do you suggest I read to become more financially literate?\u201d In my opinion, here are some of the best books written on finance.<\/p>\n

Historic Perspectives<\/b><\/p>\n

The presence of brilliance can be found in Benjamin Graham\u2019s foundational texts, Security Analysis\u00a0(with David Dodd) and The Intelligent Investor.\u00a0Touted as the \u201cfather of value investing,\u201d Graham was a professor at Columbia University, where he came to mentor then-graduate student, Warren Buffett.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m drawn to everything written by Warren Buffett\u2014books, articles, the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letter, and essays. If I had to choose a book that most influenced me, it is The Essays of Warren Buffett.<\/p>\n

When I first voiced my interest in working on Wall Street, I was given a copy of Peter Lynch\u2019s 1989 book,\u00a0One Up On Wall Street,\u00a0which the author followed with publishing\u00a0Beating the Street. To this day, I refer to relevant chapters in these two books.<\/p>\n

Academic Resources<\/b><\/p>\n

I love to reference Mark Anson\u2019s\u00a0The Handbook of Alternative Assets\u00a0and\u00a0The Handbook of Traditional and Alternative Investment Vehicles: Investment Characteristics and Strategies\u00a0he co-wrote with Frank Fabozzi and Frank Joseph Jones.\u00a0Fabozzi\u2019s\u00a0The Handbook of Fixed Income Securities\u00a0is my favorite. It provides explanations for any level of investor in understanding the bond market.\u00a0All three books are on my bookshelf, and well used.<\/p>\n

Storied Approaches<\/b><\/p>\n

I enjoy reading almost every book written by New Orleans native, Michael Lewis. Four of my favorites are\u00a0Liar\u2019s Poker, Panic! The Story of Modern Financial Insanity, The Big Short and Flash Boys.<\/p>\n

An excellent book about the defunct hedge fund, Long-Term Capital Management, is When Genius Failed: The Rise and Fall of Long-Term Capital Management, by Roger Lowenstein.<\/p>\n

A more recent and genuinely unbelievable tale of financial fraud written by Tom Wright and Bradley Hope, about businessman and fugitive, Jho Low,\u00a0Billion Dollar Whale\u00a0recalls Low\u2019s swindling of governments, investment bankers, moguls, models, and the Hollywood elite.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re interested in becoming educated on the history of investing, increasing your personal financial literacy, or gaining a better understanding of today\u2019s markets, you may find these suggestions useful and entertaining.<\/p>\n
