We know that a clean climate is very important for us. We know that climate change is real. We know that global emissions have reduced greatly in the past weeks because we are in quarantine. But that is not a permanent solution.
According to a report by the United Nations, global emissions almost always increase after an economic crash like this. But, the thing is, we can’t have another increase in emissions. We don’t have much time left. We need to do something now before it is too late because there will be irreversible damage to the climate if not. A great example of when emissions spiked after an economic crash is the 2008 recession. In 2009 emissions were only at about 8.6 billions tons. But only one year later, emissions spiked to 9.1 billion tons! That was a new record and the most emissions in history. Many experts say that this crisis will be much more detrimental than any other in history, apart from the Great Depression, and after, there will be massive growth in emissions. But, there is hope for us. We have the power to transform our economy. It won’t be easy, and there is no simple solution.

Atentamente,
Kamila Esparza
12 años
Estudiante, Wood River Middle School

Ketchum, ID 5/9/20

Effects of contamination

Editor of the Wood River Weekly,

The coronavirus has impacted the environment and people in an impressive way.

Before coronavirus appeared, contamination was a huge problem in this world and it continues to do so. A decrease in traffic and industrial activity has caused a temporary decrease in pollution. Air quality in cities around the world has been greatly improved by the pandemic that no one expected, however we wanted. Thanks to social distancing and travel restrictions, many people do not fly and have dramatically reduced the amount of time they spend in cars, which releases nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant made by fossil fuels. Unfortunately, the effects of reduced gas emissions are dubious, so a remedy for the virus is sought.

In conclusion, the virus will pass and the industry will grow again, so people will return to their routine of using vehicles. Using bicycles and buses will help reduce the pollution we put into our world so that we can live in a good environment again. This is because people drive less and stay home. I think we can continue to do this and continue to reduce pollution after quarantine. I think now that people see how much pollution there is, they will realize how polluted the Earth was before.

After quarantine, I don’t mean not traveling to places and not driving. I mean take your bike or walk when possible. you don’t need to drive two blocks to your friend’s house or the subway. Not everyone has to. Even if a small portion of people did, it would make a big difference. We have to spread this because only the people in the city who noticed this change. If you live in a small town or anywhere outside of a fairly large city, you really won’t notice any difference. There are benefits to not using your car as much as you exercise, you don’t have to pay for fuel, and it helps the environment.

After this is over, just try to remember how little contamination there was during the quarantine, and bike more places.

From
Levi Renner
11 years
Student, Wood River Middle School

Atentamente,

Miley Vvilcapoma
6th grade
Estudiante, Wood River Middle School

Hailey, Idaho May 16, 2020

The air during COVID and what we can do

Wood River Weekly Editor

We all know that COVID is not good for humans because it is causing many problems, but what is happening now is good for the environment. At this time, COVID is a benefit for the air and other things. Since COVID began to affect us, the airs in large cities and in many more parts of the world are slowly clearing up. This is happening because in many cities like Hong Kong they have stopped using the factories until things are improved. It is helping a lot because factories produce a lot of smoke and pollute the air. It is also happening because many people are not going out and don’t use their smoke-producing cars before. Although the airs are not so polluted, many people now think that when COVID leaves, everything will go way back to normal with the polluted airs again and they will not be clear. I would like that the air would not be as polluted as before COVID but that they are cleaner. We can help by not producing as much smoke as reducing how many times they are in a car and not using it as much. Do not burn materials as in the Amazon they are burning many trees that produce smoke. If we do these things and try to have a change with the environment it would be better for us and the environment.

Thank you for reading my lyrics, I would like to improve the environment and I think that if we can manage to clear the air after COVID, with your help I think we can do it

Sincerely,

Miley Vilcapoma
6th grade
Student, Wood River Middle School

Hailey, Idaho a 10 de Mayo del 2020

Contamination Ambiente
