\"\"My name is Sofia Peller and I am a senior at Wood River High School. I am the\u00a0co-president of the W.A.T.E.R. Club. W.A.T.E.R. stands for: We Appreciate The Earth\u2019s Resources and our mission is to educate and support our peers and inspire positive environmental action within our community. We are an action-oriented club.<\/p>\n

In the past, we have planted trees, cleaned the highway, introduced new legislation to reduce single-use plastic bags, put water-bottle refill stations in our school, installed hand dryers in the bathrooms, implemented education outreach in the Mountain Rides buses, and made signs for the large\u00a0recycling bins in Hailey and Bellevue.<\/p>\n

When discussing climate change and plastic pollution, we often hear about threats to\u00a0marine animals and ocean habitat. While posing a great threat to coastal areas, it also affects\u00a0communities like ours. Plastic pollution can kill plant life and poses dangers to animals and their\u00a0habitat. Landfills and trash allow pollutants to enter the ground and affect wildlife and groundwater for years to come. Plastic breaks down into microplastics that can contaminate the water\u00a0and food we eat.<\/p>\n

I am writing to inform community members about the club\u2019s current project. We are\u00a0working to reduce the use of single-use plastic at public city events. We are hoping to create an\u00a0ordinance and resolution in the City of Hailey and we need your help! This is a huge goal and\u00a0we know this will be more successful with community input.<\/p>\n

The W.A.T.E.R. Club is on the agenda to present to the Hailey City Council on Feb. 24. We need to show the council that this change is necessary and is supported by community members. Please join us on March 9 and March 23 at the City Council meeting to show your support by making a public\u00a0comment. If you are unable to attend the meetings and would still like to help with the project,\u00a0you can write a letter of support to the council members.<\/p>\n

I have seen firsthand the effects of plastic pollution while traveling in Panama where\u00a0plastic has overtaken beaches and parts of the ocean. I met indigenous people whose lives are\u00a0at risk because of rising sea levels and contaminated water. The effect that humans are having\u00a0on the earth is real and we need to change. This ordinance is a way that our city can start to\u00a0create change and better our environment. Thank you for your support.<\/p>\n

Me llamo Sofia Peller y estoy en mi \u00faltimo a\u00f1o en el Wood River High School. Soy la\u00a0co-presidente de W.A.T.E.R. club. El significado de W.A.T.E.R. es: Nosotros Agradecemos\u00a0Recursos del Mundo y nuestra misi\u00f3n es educar y apoyar a nuestros compa\u00f1eros, e inspirar\u00a0una acci\u00f3n ambiental dentro de la comunidad. Somos un club orientado a la acci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

En el pasado hemos plantado \u00e1rboles, limpiado la carretera, introducido una nueva legislaci\u00f3n para reducir las bolsas de pl\u00e1stico, hemos puesto estaciones para rellenar botellas de agua en\u00a0nuestra escuela, hemos instalado secadores de manos en los ba\u00f1os, carteles de educaci\u00f3n en\u00a0los buses de Mountain Rides, y se\u00f1ales para los grandes contenedores de reciclaje en Hailey y\u00a0Bellevue.<\/p>\n

Cuando hablamos sobre cambio clim\u00e1tico y contaminaci\u00f3n de pl\u00e1stico, a menudo o\u00edmos\u00a0sobre la amenaza a los animales marinos y el oc\u00e9ano. Si, es una gran amenaza para los\u00a0lugares de costa, pero tambi\u00e9n nuestra comunidad. Estoy escribiendo para informar a la comunidad sobre el proyecto del club. Estamos\u00a0trabajando para reducir los pl\u00e1sticos de un solo uso en los eventos p\u00fablicos de la ciudad.<\/p>\n

Esperamos que podamos crear una ordenanza y resoluci\u00f3n en el ciudad de Hailey y\u00a0necesitamos su ayuda. Esto es una gran meta y sabemos que esto tendr\u00e1 m\u00e1s \u00e9xito con la\u00a0aportaci\u00f3n de la comunidad.<\/p>\n

El W.A.T.E.R club va a presentar a el concejo municipal de Hailey\u00a0el 24 de Febrero. Necesitamos demostrar que este cambio es necesario y que est\u00e1 respaldado\u00a0por la comunidad. Por favor \u00fanase a nosotros en el 9 y 23 de Marzo en la reuni\u00f3n del\u00a0ayuntamiento para mostrar su apoyo haciendo comentarios p\u00fablicos. Si no puede atender,\u00a0puede escribir una carta a los conciliares.<\/p>\n

He visto los efectos de la contaminaci\u00f3n pl\u00e1stica mientras un viaje en Panam\u00e1, donde el\u00a0pl\u00e1stico ha superado a playas y el oc\u00e9ano. Conoc\u00ed a personas ind\u00edgenas y est\u00e1n en riesgo\u00a0debido al aumento del nivel del mar y el agua contaminada.
