\u201cOf course,\u201d I said.<\/i><\/p>\n

He sits down and looks at me tentatively.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI read your scholarship essay, and I wanted to thank you for changing my perspective on things the minute I read it, but I wasn\u2019t sure how to. You\u2019re inspiring.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

My name is Monica Carrillo-Casas, and I am a student at the College of Southern Idaho. I never knew music would be the way I would help many people feel comfortable with their status and embrace it for what it is, but I\u2019m honored to have inspired the positive outlet for what it\u2019s become.<\/p>\n

I started playing the violin at the age of 13 and was able to attend weekly private violin lessons through generous scholarships from the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. The Sun Valley Music Festival was also a huge aspect as to why I was creative and challenging myself musically, as they\u2019ve always supported each and every student, no matter what hardships you are going through. Because of this, I\u2019ve learned that fear can be turned into something beautiful.<\/p>\n

As a Hispanic student living in a Republican state, I\u2019ve finally been able to understand I have a voice because of the outstanding music programs, and I hope you know that you do, too.<\/p>\n

Mi nombre es Monica Carrillo-Casas, y soy estudiante en el College of Southern Idaho.
