{"id":10230,"date":"2019-01-04T20:33:23","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T20:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/?p=10230"},"modified":"2019-01-04T20:33:23","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T20:33:23","slug":"jullisa-romero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/04\/jullisa-romero\/","title":{"rendered":"JULLISA ROMERO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\"><i>Has high hopes to become a pilot and fly commercial planes for Delta<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">By Emilee Mae Struss<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10231\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10231\" src=\"https:\/\/woodriverweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/JullisaRomero_studentspotlight-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jullisa Romero.Photo courtesy of Jullisa Romero<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">W<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ood River High School senior Jullisa Romero made a life-changing observation while traveling by air from the U.S. to Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI always have enjoyed flying,\u201d Romero said, \u201cand the thing that sparked my interest is that I noticed not many pilots are women, and even fewer women that are pilots are Mexican-American.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">With her high school career quickly coming to an end, Romero plans to attend the College of Southern Idaho to complete general courses and then transfer to Treasure Valley Community College in Caldwell for pilot school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">After that, she hopes to attend Boise State University to get her master\u2019s degree in aeronautical engineering. And her ultimate dream is to fly commercial planes for Delta. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Born and raised in the Wood River Valley, Romero\u2019s first career interest\u2014the culinary arts\u2014took flight when she enrolled in the Family Career Community Leaders of America program in eighth grade. FCCLA helps students prepare for \u201cthe real world\u201d by infusing certain lifelong skills into the students\u2019 curriculum, such as sewing and cooking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI really love cooking,\u201d Romero said, \u201cand Momma Pratt (the FCCLA teacher) is so great and helpful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">The program has six different kitchens, each a different color, and the students sometimes get specific challenges like getting a random assortment of ingredients to make a meal from. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI really like that part of it,\u201d Romero said. \u201cBecause growing up Mexican-American, my mom would always make up recipes and mix different recipes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Romero says cooking is all about \u201cplaying around\u201d and \u201ctrying a pinch of this or a dash of that\u201d to get the perfect meal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Every Tuesday, Romero and her classmates sell out of their pumpkin-chocolate chip cookies, lemon bars and jalape\u00f1o poppers. The funds go to raise money for new equipment in the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Romero was also the cheerleading captain at WRHS her junior year, an activity she still loves to do but felt she had to set aside to focus on academics for her senior year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWhat I love about cheerleading,\u201d Romero said, \u201cis that you get to be right on the floor in the action, cheering on your team, and I just get so excited to be that close.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Romero grew up skiing, ice skating and exploring the surrounding mountains, with Hailey\u2019s Carbonate Mountain a favorite. She also enjoys spending lengthy summer days on her longboard, riding the paved trails in Ketchum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">She is currently enrolled in A.P. Psychology, Government, Algebra II, College English, Culinary and GRIT. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">GRIT is a class specifically designed to support students in advanced courses and to help them prepare for college. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Romero works as a hostess at the Mason family restaurants, Enoteca and Town Square Tavern, in Ketchum. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe Masons are an amazing family to work for,\u201d Romero said. \u201cIt\u2019s more like working with friends than bosses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Last year Romero traveled to India for one month with the Flourish Foundation, a Compassionate Leaders program based in Hailey. The program teaches students how to understand and navigate emotions through meditation and awareness practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe ask ourselves questions like, what is anger?
