OUR VOICE COUNTS
My name is Alan Palomera, and I am a 14-year-old student who moved from Mexico to the United States when I was four years old. I live in the Valley with my family, which includes three siblings. We chose to come to this Valley because of its bountiful landscapes and the many unique places it offers. I was able to discover all of this thanks to the Idaho BaseCamp.
I first learned about this program in fifth grade during a camping trip organized by BaseCamp. I didn’t have much information about the program until eighth grade when a counselor introduced me to a new initiative called the Outdoor Hispanic Leaders’ Program. Initially, I was excited about the program, but after attending for the first time, I was amazed by all the places it showed me and the new friends I made while I was there. The program encouraged me to be more social; before joining, I was a quiet kid with few friends, but afterward, I became much more outgoing.
Currently, I am in eighth grade and performing exceptionally well in school, maintaining a 4.0 GPA as an honor student. My journey in mastering English has been impressive; I am now bilingual and fluent in both English and Spanish.
I developed a strong interest in math after my fifth-grade teacher encouraged me to enroll in an accelerated math program. This year, I have been placed in a double-accelerated math pathway for high school, demonstrating my continued advancement in the subject. Additionally, I have a passion for science and consistently earn top grades. I plan to take two science courses when I enter high school.
Finally, I want to study architecture and electrical engineering as a second career. First of all, I want to study architecture because I have always been amazed at how someone can come up with an idea to build different structures and then turn that design into reality. My interest has continued to grow, especially after learning more about the subject during career exploration.
Recently, my interest increased even more after finding out that my math teacher is an architect. I started asking him about architecture and learned more about what they do. I also find electrical engineering fascinating; I believe it would be a great addition to my career as an architect. For this reason, I want to attend the University of Utah because is a college that my parents recommended me.

Me llamo Alan Palomera y soy un estudiante de 14 años que se mudó de México a Estados Unidos cuando tenía cuatro. Vivo en el Valle con mi familia, compuesta por tres hermanos. Elegimos venir a este Valle por sus exuberantes paisajes y los muchos lugares únicos que ofrece. Pude descubrir todo esto gracias a Idaho BaseCamp.
Conocí este programa en quinto grado durante un viaje de campamento organizado por BaseCamp. No tenía mucha información sobre el programa hasta octavo grado, cuando un consejero me presentó una nueva iniciativa llamada Programa de Líderes Hispanos al Aire Libre. Al principio, estaba entusiasmado con el programa, pero después de asistir por primera vez, me sorprendieron todos los lugares que me mostró y los nuevos amigos que hice allí. El programa me animó a ser más sociable; antes de unirme, era un niño tranquilo con pocos amigos, pero después me volví mucho más extrovertido. Actualmente, estoy en octavo grado y tengo un rendimiento escolar excepcional, manteniendo un promedio de 4.0 como estudiante de honor. Mi camino hacia el dominio del inglés ha sido impresionante; ahora soy bilingüe y hablo inglés y español con fluidez.
Desarrollé un gran interés por las matemáticas después de que mi maestra de quinto grado me animara a inscribirme en un programa acelerado de matemáticas. Este año, me han asignado a un programa de matemáticas doblemente acelerado para la preparatoria, lo que demuestra mi continuo progreso en la materia. Además, me apasionan las ciencias y siempre obtengo las mejores calificaciones. Planeo tomar dos cursos de ciencias cuando ingrese a la preparatoria.
Finalmente, quiero estudiar arquitectura e ingeniería eléctrica como segunda carrera. En primer lugar, quiero estudiar arquitectura porque siempre me ha sorprendido cómo alguien puede idear una estructura diferente y luego convertir ese diseño en realidad. Mi interés ha seguido creciendo, especialmente después de aprender más sobre el tema durante la exploración de carreras.
Recientemente, mi interés aumentó aún más al descubrir que mi profesor de matemáticas es arquitecto. Empecé a preguntarle sobre arquitectura y aprendí más sobre su trabajo. También me fascina la ingeniería eléctrica; creo que sería una gran incorporación a mi carrera como arquitecto. Por eso, quiero asistir a la Universidad de Utah, porque es una universidad que me recomendaron mis padres.
